The Opening Ceremony of the "Eco-Fisherman" Project
Green Southerners held the opening ceremony of the "Eco-Fisherman" project in the Sarafand Municipality in the presence of the mayor, Mr. Ali Haider Khalifa, and the Counselor to the Canadian Embassy, Mr. Joel Monfils, along with the accompanying delegation, a number of fishermen, and representatives of the Fishermen's Syndicate. A workshop was held to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic on the marine environment and diverse species, and how to deal with remnants of fishing gear, as well as how to handle marine fauna if they get caught in nets, such as sea turtles and marine mammals.
The workshop was followed by handing the fishermen landing fishing nets as a symbolic gift, and then the Canadian delegation visited the Sarafand port, where the Green Southerners team placed metal containers designated for sorting marine plastic waste and damaged fishing nets.
The project will also take place in the ports of Sidon and Tyre, where workshops will be conducted for fishermen in coordination and cooperation with the municipalities of the two cities and the Syndicate of Fishermen.
