Vision
Preserving the Traditional Cultural and Architectural Heritage
Recognizing the threat posed by modern construction encroachments to the identity of villages and towns and to the traditional architectural heritage of Jabal Amel in southern Lebanon, the Green South Association launched a project in April 2015 to protect and preserve the region’s cultural and traditional architecture. The project is based on preparing a Traditional Jabal Amel Architecture Guidelines manual, intended as a reference tool for municipalities and relevant authorities in restoration and rehabilitation efforts.
The project focuses on:
Documenting architectural elements of traditional buildings (entrances, facades, courtyards, arches, windows, flooring, etc.) and identifying their original materials.
Establishing scientific principles for preserving architectural identity during restoration and preventing the introduction of alien elements that could distort the heritage character.
Engaging municipalities in adopting plans to protect heritage neighborhoods and restore the traditional urban landscape.
Raising awareness about the value of traditional architecture as an essential part of the region’s cultural identity and collective memory.
Through this project, the association aims to restore the significance of traditional architecture in Jabal Amel and southern Lebanon, integrating it into sustainable development pathways by promoting cultural tourism and safeguarding the architectural heritage of the region for future generations.
