Green Southerners at the Emergency Conference on the Waste Crisis
Green Southerners participated in the proceedings of the Emergency Conference on the Waste Crisis, organized by colleagues from the Lebanese Environmental Movement at the UNESCO Palace in Beirut. The conference included four sessions addressing the waste crisis from different perspectives and presenting possible solutions, with the participation and attendance of a large number of activists, concerned citizens, specialists, representatives of environmental associations, as well as fellow activists from the Lebanese Environmental Movement.
Speaking at the conference on behalf of Green Southerners was colleague Mohammad Bazzi, who began by presenting the organisation’s experience with the Ras Al-Ain landfill, along with the steps taken and the proposal submitted by the organisation to address it. He then spoke about the repercussions of the waste crisis on wildlife and the serious risks it poses to wild animals, marine turtles, and fish. He also pointed to another aspect affected by landfills that often does not receive sufficient attention, namely archaeological sites spread across Lebanese territory without classification or protective measures. He noted that some sites proposed as landfill locations are places that possess significant cultural characteristics and potential.
