European Roller (Coracias garrulus)

When the European Jackdaw Disappeared from Lebanon

The European jackdaw, or European olive crow, used to breed across Lebanon, but this has stopped and it no longer breeds in the country due to excessive hunting. Today, it only passes over Lebanon during migration season.

In spring, the European jackdaw appears vibrant with a blue head, turquoise-blue wings, and a reddish-brown back, while in autumn it may appear paler, and it can be distinguished from the Indian jackdaw by its blue head.

Its preferred food consists of beetles and grasshoppers. This bird may remain motionless on a tree for a long time before swooping down to catch its prey from the ground.
