Freshwater Turtles (Terrapins) - Tyre Coast Nature Reserve

Tyre Coast Nature Reserve (TCNR)

In addition to terrestrial and marine turtle species, the Tyre Coast Nature Reserve hosts freshwater turtles of the Caspian or Stripe-Necked Turtle species. This is the only species known to exist in Lebanon. The reserve is one of their most important habitats, along with the Aamiq Wetland Reserve in the Beqaa region. A total of 30 freshwater turtles of this kind were recorded in the reserve’s artificial lake alone.

The Stripe-Necked Turtles live in lakes, rivers, canals, and marshes. Although they can adapt to various types of aquatic habitats, they require water throughout the year to survive. They are omnivorous, feeding on both dead and live animals such as fish, mollusks, amphibians, and plant material.

They often come out of the water for long periods, usually in groups, but quickly return when disturbed. The best time to spot them is in autumn, when water levels drop and the turtles gather in their favorite spots.
